Identification & Behavior: ~17 cm (6.7 in). Males Scarlet-hooded Barbet have a scarlet head and throat down to mid-belly. The rest of the underparts are streaked. Females have yellow underparts with streaked on the mid-belly and flanks. Both sexes have bluish-gray sides of the breast. The upperparts are golden olive. Females resemble males of the Lemon-throated Barbet but are distinguished by more extensive yellow and no red on the underparts. The similar male Red-headed Barbet is not known to overlap with this species.

Status: The Scarlet-hooded Barbet is uncommon in Amazonia where is largely restricted to Ucayali and Madre de Dios. It is known to range up to 900 m along the foothill of the Andes. It also occurs in Br and Bo.

Name in Spanish: Barbudo de Capucha Escarlata.

Sub-species: Scarlet-hooded Barbet (Eubucco tucinkae), Seilern 1913.

Meaning of Name: Eubucco: Gr. Eu= elegant and bucco= cheek. richardsonii: tribute to the surgeon, zoologist, botanist, geologist and Scottish explorer Sir John Richardson-(1787-1865).
