Identification & Behavior: ~18 cm (7 in). The Russet-mantled Softtail is mostly rufous-chestnut with a lighter colored belly and a graduated tail. It has a variable amount of brown on the forehead, face, and throat. The bill is whitish gray. The juvenile has the underparts scaled with dusky. It forages in the understory and mid-story of humid montane forests almost always in the company of mixed species flocks. It is similar to the Rufous Spinetail but is distinguished by having a broad rufous tail, brown on the forehead, face, and chin, a whitish gray bill, and no black on the loral area. Status: Endemic. The Russet-mantled Softtail generally uncommon in montane forests of the east slope of the Andes at elevations ranging between 2500-3400 m.

Meaning of Name: Thripophaga: Gr. thripos= woodworm and phagos= eating. Thripophagos= eating woodworms. berlepschi: In honor of Hans Hermann Carl Ludwig Graf von Berlepsch (1850-1915) German ornithologist, collector specializing in the Neotropical avifauna
