Identification & Behavior: ~9.5 cm (3.7 in). The Speckle-chested Piculet has black throat and breast with large white spots. The rest of the underparts are barred. Both male and females have black top of the head with white spots, but only the males have orange on the forehead. It may overlap with Lafresnaye’s Piculet, which has evenly barred underparts. It is not known to overlap with Ocellated Piculet.

Status: Endemic. The Speckle-chested Piculet is geographically restricted to the Huallaga Valley and parts of the Utcubamba Valley. It is uncommon at elevations ranging between 1100 – 2100 m.

Name in Spanish: Carpinterito con Pecho Jaspeado.

Sub-species: Speckle-chested Piculet (Picumnus steindachneri), Taczanowski 1882.

Meaning of Name: Picumnus: Fr. Picumne, Piculet= little woodpecker. steindachneri: After Franz Steindach, Austrian Zoologist and Director of the Viena Museum.
