Identification & Behavior: ~17 cm (7 in). The Sapphire-rumped Parrotlet has a brown band bordering the scapular feathers or back area. The brown bands form a V. The tail is square and purple with a thin green terminal band (males) and dusky thin terminal band (female). The bill is grayish. The rump is sapphire blue. It is mostly seen in small flocks that fly fast over the canopy. It is similar to the Scarlet-shouldered Parrotlet but is distinguished be being mostly green, smaller, and a brown “V” on the back.

Status: The Sapphire-rumped Parrotlet is rare and restricted to the northeastern part of the department of Loreto. It also occurs in Co, Ec, and Br.

Name in Spanish: Periquito de Lomo Zafiro.

Sub-species: Sapphire-rumped Parrotlet (Touit purpuratus viridiceps), Chapman 1929.

Meaning of Name: Touit: Tupi eté (Brazilian Indian)= small parrot, parakeet. purpuratus: L. purpurata, purpur, porphura= purple dress, purple.
