Identification & Behavior: ~46.5 cm (18.3 in). The Adult Slate-colored Hawk is dark gray. The cere, lores, areas around the eyes, and legs are red. The juvenile is similar to the adult but has a white barred belly. The tail shows a single broad white bar and a thin white terminal band.  It is similar to the Great Black Hawk but is distinguished by smaller size, red legs cere and face. The Crane Hawk has red legs, but is taller, more slender, and has a gray face.

Status: The Slate-colored Hawk is uncommon in Amazonia where is closely associated with forest and other habitats near water. It also occurs in Co, Ec, Br, and Bo.

Name in Spanish: Gavilán Azul.

Sub-species: Slate-colored Hawk (Buteogallus schistaceus), Sundevall 1850.

Meaning of Name: Buteogallus: Gr. Buteo= vulture, buzzard; and gallus= Chanticleer. schistaceus: L. schists, schistaceus= shale, shale color, gray-slate.
