Identification & Behavior: ~88 cm (34.5 in). The Southern Screamer is large and stockier than the similar Horned Screamer. It is mostly gray with white specks and pale margins of some feathers. Long neck with black collar bordered by a pale collar. Relatively small head with red bare skin on the face and loral areas. It has a crest that projects out from the nape.
Status: The Southern Screamer is considered a rare visitor in Peru. The few records for this species come from Southeast Peru. Specifically from the Department of Madre de Dios. It also occurs in Br and Bo.
Name in Spanish: Gritador Chaja.
Sub-species: Southern Screamer (Chauna torquata) Oken, 1816.
Meaning of Name: Chauna: Gr khaunos= spongy, rough, porous; referring to the air sacs under the skin of the screamers. torquata: L collar necklace.
