Identification & Behavior: ~16 cm (6.2 in). The Pied Puffbird is the smallest of the black and white puffbirds. They have a prominent black breast band separating the white underparts and no white neck band across the nape. Distinguished from White-necked Puffbird and Brown-banded Puffbird by its small size, white patches in scapular feathers area, no white nape band, white spots on the crown, and tail feathers have a white terminal spot. They perch for extended periods on exposed branches.
Status: The Pied Puffbird is generally rare in the canopy of Varzea and to lesser extend Terra Firme Forests where it seems to favor forest edges. It also occurs in Co, Ec, Br, and Bo.
