Identification & Behavior: ~15 cm (6 in). The three subspecies of the Lemon-throated Barbet vary in plumage coloration. The sub-species nigriceps has a black head instead of crimson in other forms. Females are similar across sub-species. Males resemble females of the Scarlet-hooded Barbet but are distinguished by having an orange/red breast. The Lemon-throated Barbet favors floodplain and varzea forests.

Status: The Lemon-throated Barbet is uncommon in Amazonia where it is known to range up to 1000 m along the foothill of the Andes. It also occurs in Co, Ec, Br, and Bo.

Name in Spanish: Barbudo de Garganta Limon.

Sub-species: Lemon-throated Barbet (Eubucco richardsoni richardsoni), G. R. Gray, 1846. SE Colombia, e Ecuador and n Peru (west of Iquitos).
(Eubucco richardsoni nigriceps), Chapman 1928. NE Peru (lower Río Napo) to extreme nw Brazil in w Amazonas.
(Eubucco richardsoni aurantiicollis), P. L. Sclater, 1858. E Peru s of R. Marañón and w Brazil s of Amazon to nw Bolivia.

Meaning of Name: Capito: L. Caput= head, big head. richardsonii: tribute to the surgeon, zoologist, botanist, geologist, and Scottish explorer. Sir John Richardson-(1787-1865).
