Identification & Behavior: ~20 cm (7.8 in). The male Plum-throated Cotinga is turquoise blue without markings. It has a plum-colored throat and pale yellow iris. The female has gray-brown upperparts mottled with dusky. The underparts are warmer brown mottled with dusky. The iris is pale. It forages in the canopy of floodplain and Terra Firme forests. It is similar to the Spangled Cotinga, but the male is distinguished by the lack of markings and pale yellow iris. The female is warmer brown and has a pale iris.

Status: The Plum-throated Cotinga is uncommon and widespread in Amazonia where it is known to range up to 1000 m along the foothill of the Andes. It also occurs in Co, Ec, Br, and Bo.

Name in Spanish: Cotinga de Garganta Morada.

Sub-species: Plum-throated Cotinga (Cotinga maynana), (Linnaeus), 1766.

Meaning of Name: Cotinga: Tupí name Catingá= bright forest (bird), for the colourful cotingas. maynana: Mayna= Amerindian people of north-western Amazonia.
