Identification & Behavior: ~18 cm (7 in). The male Red-billed Pied-Tanager is mostly blue-black with a bright red bill and white belly. The female is similar but has a gray mantle. It favors the canopy of mature terra firme forest. It is similar to the Black-and-White Tanager but is distinguished by being larger and having a bright red bill.
Status: The Red-billed Pied-Tanager is uncommon in Amazonia where it is known to range up to 600 m along the foothill of the Andes. It also occurs in Br and Bo.
Name in Spanish: Tangara Pintada de Pico Rojo.
Sub-species: Red-billed Pied Tanager (Lamprospiza melanoleuca), (Vieillot), 1817.
Meaning of Name: Lamprospiza: Gr. Lampros= brilliant and spiza= finch. melanoleuca: Gr. melas, melanos= black and leukos= white.
