Identification & Behavior: ~18 cm (7 in). The Rufous-capped Antthrush is overall olive-gray with a rufous crown and nape. The face, sides of the head, and breast, down to the mid belly, are black. Juvenile birds have a whitish throat. It walks on the forest floor. It is the only Antthrush with a rufous cap. See Black-faced Antthrush.

Status: The Rufous-capped Antthrush is restricted to the Amazonian lowlands where it favors Terra Firme forest. It is widespread but varies in its relative abundance from fairly common to rare. It is known to range up to 500 m along the foothill of the Andes. It also occurs in Co, Ec, Br, and Bo.

Name in Spanish: Gallito-Hormiguero de Gorro Rufo.

Sub-species: Rufous-capped Antthrush (Formicarius colma nigrifrons), Gould 1855.

Meaning of Name: Formicarius: L. Formica: an ant, a bird associated with ants. colma: Fr. Collier=collar.
