Identification & Behavior: ~19.5 cm (7.6 in). The Chestnut-backed Thornbird has rufous upperparts and tail. The crown and back of the nape are gray-brown. The iris is bluish gray. The throat is white and grades to a breast speckled with brown. The flanks are rufous. It forages in scrub and sparse dry woodlands in pairs. Large stick nests are often found in the Chestnut-backed Thornbird’s habitat. It is superficially similar to the Rufous-fronted Thornbird but their geographic ranges are not known to overlap.
Status: Endemic. The Chestnut-backed Thornbird is uncommon in scrub and sparse woodlands in part of the Marañon drainage at elevations ranging between 2000-3100 m.
Name in Spanish: Espinero de Dorso Castaño.
Sub-species: Chestnut-backed Thornbird (Phacellodomus dorsalis), Salvin, 1895.
Meaning of Name: Phacellodomus. Gr phakellos= bundle of twigs, domos= house. dorsalis: L. dorsum= back, dorsal= of the back.
