Identification & Behavior: ~12.5 cm (5 in). The Grayish Miner has gray-brown upperparts with a buffy superciliary. The wing coverts are edged with gray-brown. The underparts are pale brownish with a tinge of rufous on the sides and flanks. The webbing on the wing is gray. The webbing on the tail is blackish, which is readily seen when the bird flies. It forages on the ground with sparse grass or bare ground often in loose mono-specific flocks. It is similar to the Coastal Miner but is distinguished by having darker upperparts, a variable amount of rufous tinge on the flanks, and gray wing and blackish tail. Also, see Thick-billed Miner.

Status: The Grayish Miner is uncommon on the west slope of the Andes at elevations ranging between 300-2400 m. It also occurs in Ch.

Name in Spanish: Minero Gris.

Sub-species: Grayish Miner (Geositta maritima), (d’Orbigny and Lafresnaye), 1837.

Meaning of Name: Geositta: Gr. geo= ground and genus Sitta, Linnaeus, 1758, nuthatch. One that looks like a (ground) nuthatch. maritima: L. mare, maris= sea, maritimus= maritime, of the sea.
