Identification & Behavior: ~14 cm (5.5 in). The Red-and-White Spinetail has reddish-rufous upperparts and tail. The crown is rufous without a supercilium. The underparts are white. It forages in grass and shrubs in marshes and at the edges of riverine habitats. It is similar to the Yellow-chinned Spinetail but is distinguished by a smaller size and by having white underparts without a yellow chin patch and pale supercilium. Status: The Red-and-White Spinetail is fairly common along the Amazon and Ucayali Rivers. It also ranges in part of the lower Marañon River and a small portion of the Napo River. The Red-and-White Spinetail also occurs in Co and Br.

Name in Spanish: Cola-Espina Rojo y Blanco.

Sub-species: Red-and-white Spinetail (Certhiaxis mustelinus), (P. L. Sclater), 1874.

Meaning of Name: Certhiaxis: Similar to one of the genus Certhia Linnaeus, 1758, treecreeper. mustelinus: L. mus, muris= mouse, mustelinus= like a weasel (i.e. chestnut or tawny and white).
