Identification & Behavior: ~16.5 cm (6.5 in).The Brown Jacamar is dark brown (seen from a distance) with a black bill. Pairs or family groups favor forest edges where they perch in horizontal branches waiting for passing insects they catch on the wing. Distinguished from the similar White-throated Jacamar by having a dark throat and face and black bill. Both species replace each other geographically and are not known to overlap.
Status: The Brown Jacamar is the only small brown jacamar north of the Amazon and Marañon rivers. It is generally rare and sparsely distributed within its range. It also occurs in Co, Ec, Br, and, Bo.
Name in Spanish: Jacamar Pardo.
Sub-species: Brown Jacamar (Brachygalba lugubris caquetae) Chapman, 1917.
Meaning of Name: Brachygalba: Gr. Brakhus=small or short, galba= in reference to Galbula, a small yellowish bird. lugubris: L. Lugere= sad, to cry.
