Identification & Behavior: ~23 cm (9 in). The White-chinned Jacamar is iridescent green with a black bill and rufous belly and tail. Birds show a variable amount of white in the chin. They favor forest edges where pairs perch on horizontal branches waiting for passing insects they catch on the wing. It is nearly identical to the Bluish-fronted Jacamar, but they replace each other geographically.

Status: The White-chinned Jacamar is generally fairly common in Amazonia. It is known to range up to 1200 m along the foothill of the Andes.  Found only on the north side of the Amazon and Ucayali Rivers. It also occurs in Co, Ec, and Br.

Name in Spanish: Jacamar de Barbilla Blanca.

Sub-species: White-chinned Jacamar (Galbula tombacea tombacea) Spix, 1824.

Meaning of Name: Galbula: Gr. Galbula= a small yellowish bird. tombacea: French Tombac=brown or copper-colored.
