Identification & Behavior: ~18.5 cm (7.3 in). The Chestnut-crowned Antpitta has an olive back and chestnut head. The throat is white. The underparts are white with long olive streaks.  It forages on the floor of humid and semi-humid forest edges, isolated patches of scrub, and agricultural hedgerows. It resembles Watkins’s Antpitta, but their ranges are not known to overlap.

Status: The Chestnut-crowned Antpitta is common on the northwest Andes on both sides of the Marañon River. It also occurs in Co and Ec.

Name in Spanish: Tororoi de Corona Castaña.

Sub-species: Chestnut-crowned Antpitta (Grallaria ruficapilla ruficapilla) Lafresnaye, 1842. S to Cerro Chinguela, in N Peru.
(G. r. albiloris) Taczanowski, 1880. Pacific slope of NW Peru S to Lambayeque, possibly S to Ancash.
(G. r. interior) J. T. Zimmer, 1934. Central Cordillera of N Peru (Amazonas and San Martín).

Meaning of Name: Grallaria: L. grallarius, grallae= one walking on stilts. ruficapilla: L. rufus= red or near red and capilla= cap.
