Identification & Behavior: ~16.5 cm (6.5 in). The Stripe-headed Antpitta has olive-brown upperparts and whitish underparts with dusky and brown streaks, scales, and scallops. The sub-species G. a. andicolus has streaked back. It is associated with Polylepis forests and adjacent scrub. It sits and waits at elevated perches scanning for insect prey. It is unmistakable in its range but see Undulated Antpitta.

Status: The Stripe-headed Antpitta is generally uncommon at the proper habitat at elevations ranging from 3000 m to 4600 m. It also occurs in Bo.

Name in Spanish: Tororoi de Cabeza Listada.

Sub-species: Stripe-headed Antpitta (Grallaria andicolus andicolus) Cabanis 1873. Andes of Peru, south locally to Ayacucho. Also, (G. a. punensis) C. Chubb 1918. Andes of s Peru (Cusco, Puno) and w Bolivia (w La Paz).

Meaning of Name: Grallaria: L. grallarius, grallae= one walking on stilts. andicolus: from the Andes.
