Identification & Behavior: ~14.5 cm (5.7 in). The adult White-banded Swallow is all glossy blue-black with a broad white band on the breast. The immature is dark gray. The tail is relatively long and deeply forked. It forages exclusively over water on Amazonian Rivers. The striking plumage is unmistakable but see the smaller White-thighed Swallow.
Status: The White-banded Swallow is common and widespread in Amazonia where it is known to range up to 1000 m along the foothill of the Andes. It also occurs in Co, Ec, Br, and Bo.
Name in Spanish: Golondrina de Faja Blanca.
Sub-species: White-banded Swallow (Atticora fasciata), (J. F. Gmelin), 1789.
Meaning of Name: Atticora: Gr. Atthi kora= epithet of the swallow and kora= maiden. fasciata: L. fasciatu, fascia = band, banded, stripe.
