Identification & Behavior: ~11.5 cm (4.5 in). The White-thighed Swallow has bluish gray upperparts with a gray rump. The underparts are uniformly sooty gray. It has white tufts on the thighs, which can be difficult to see on a fast flying swallow. It forages close to the canopy over humid forests in Amazonia and the foothill of the Andes. The larger Brown-bellied Swallow ranges at higher elevations in the Andes and is not known to overlap with the White-thighed Swallow. Also, see White-banded Swallow.
Status: The White-thighed is uncommon and widespread in Amazonia where it is known to range up to 1250 m along the foothill of the Andes. It also occurs in Co, Ec, Br, and Bo.
Name in Spanish: Golondrina de Muslo Blanco.
Sub-species: White-thighed Swallow (Atticora tibialis griseiventris), (Chapman), 1924.
Meaning of Name: Atticora: Gr. Atthi kora= epithet of the swallow and kora= maiden. tibialis: L. tibialis= pertaining to the tibia, shin-bone.
