Identification & Behavior: ~19 cm (7.5 in). The Wedge-rumped Storm-Petrel is all dusky with bars on the upperside of the wings.  The white rump extends down to near the tip of the slightly forked tail. The sides of the tail and lateral undertail coverts are also white. It is similar to Wilson’s Storm-Petrel and White-bellied (Elliot’s) Storm-Petrel, but the rump and most of the tail look white often showing only a little of the black tail.

Status: The Wedge-rumped Storm-Petrel is fairly common in pelagic water. It is known to breed on islands along the coast of Peru. It also occurs in Co, Ec, and Ch.

Name in Spanish: Golondrina de Mar Peruana.

Sub-species: Wedge-rumped Storm-Petrel (Oceanodroma tethys kelsalli), Lowe, 1925.

Meaning of Name: Hydrobates: Hydro: Gr.= water, and bates= walker, one who walks. tethys: Gr. Earth goddess, or nymph of the sea.
