Identification & Behavior: ~12.5 cm (5 in). The Black-and-White Warbler is streaked with black and white and has a pale superciliary. The male has black cheeks and black throat in alternate plumage, but only black cheeks in basic plumage. The female has pale gray cheeks, whitish throat, and sparsely streaked underparts. It forages by creeping on large limbs often upside down.  Also, see Blackpoll Warbler.

Status: The Black-and-White Warbler is a rare Boreal migrant to northern Amazonia and also to the humid and semi-humid forest of northwest Peru. It is expected in Peru during the months of September through April. The Black-and-White Warbler also occurs in Co, Ec, Br, and Bo.

Name in Spanish: Reinita Trepadora.

Sub-species: Black-and-white Warbler (Mniotilta varia), Linnaeus, 1766.

Meaning of Name: Mniotilta: Gr. Mnion= seaweed, tillō= to pluck. varia: L. varius, various= diverse, variegated.
