Rufous-breasted Piculet (Picumnus rufiventris)

Identification & Behavior: ~11 cm (4.3 in). The Rufous-breasted Piculet is mostly rufous-chestnut with a greenish olive back. Males and females have black top of the head with white spots, but only males show red foreheads. No other piculet resemble the color structure of this species.

Status: The Rufous-breasted Piculet is uncommon to rare in thickets and vines tangles in floodplain Amazonian forest. They are often associated with stands of bamboo thickets of Guadua bamboo.

Name in Spanish: Carpinterito de Pecho Rufo.

Sub-species: Rufous-breasted Piculet (Picumnus rufiventris rufiventris), Bonaparte 1838. NE Peru and W Amazonian Brazil.
(P. r. grandis), Carriker 1930. CE Peru (W to Huánuco and Junín) and neighbouring SW Amazonian Brazil.

Meaning of Name: Picumnus: Fr. Picumne, Piculet= little woodpecker. rufiventris: L. rufi= red, brown, rufous and ventris= belly.
