Identification & Behavior: ~14 cm (5.5 in). The male Flame-crowned Manakin has dusky-gray upperparts with a prominent red crown. The throat is white. The underparts are rufous. The female is a dull version of the male without red on the crown. It forages in the mid and understory of forests in Amazonia. The very similar Orange-crowned Manakin is found mostly on the north side of the Amazon and lower Marañon Rivers.
Status: The Flame-crowned Manakin is known in Peru from only a handful of sight records from extreme Southeast Peru. It also occurs in Br and Bo.
Name in Spanish: Saltarín Corona de Fuego.
Sub-species: Flame-crowned Manakin (Heterocercus linteatus), (Strickland), 1850.
Meaning of Name: Heterocercus: Gr. heteros= different and kerkos= tail. linteatus: L. linteum= linen, cloth linteatus= clothed in linen linon= flax, thread.
