Identification & Behavior: ~38 cm (15 in). The Kermadec Petrel has a light and dark morph. The dark morph is brown with a whitish face. The light morph is lighter brown with a whitish or light brown belly. Both morphs have the distinctive white underside of the primary flight feathers and white shafts on the upper side. It is highly pelagic. The plumage pattern resembles a Jaeger rather than a Pterodroma petrel. See Parkinkson’s Petrel.
Status: The Kermadec Petrel is a rare non-breeding visitor to far pelagic waters where its status is based on a few sight records mostly during the months of March-through-November. It also occurs in Br and Ch.
Name in Spanish: Petrel de Kermadec.
Sub-species: Kermadec Petrel (Pterodroma neglecta), Schlegel, 1863.
Meaning of Name: Pterodroma: Gr pteron= wing and dromos= -racer, runner. neglecta: L. neglectus= ignored, overlooked, neglected, disregarded.
