Identification & Behavior: ~32 cm (12.5 in). The Scaly-naped Parrot is all green with a dusky scaling effect on the back of the neck. The outer end of the primary flight feathers is blue. It shows red areas on the wings, but not on the shoulders. The tail has red in the base with a broad terminal lime-green band. The red in the tail is only shared with the Orange-winged Parrot, which ranges at lower elevations and has yellow cheeks and blue crown.

Status: The Scaly-naped Parrot is uncommon on the east slope of the Andes at elevations ranging between 1100-3400 m. It also occurs in Co, Ec, and Bo.

Name in Spanish: Loro de Nuca Escamosa.

Sub-species: Scaly-naped Parrot (Amazona mercenarius mercenarius), Tschudi, 1844.

Meaning of Name: Amazona: Fr. In reference or originating in the Amazon River on the Amazon Forest. mercenaria: L. mercenaries, mercenary= plated and with armored appearance.
