Identification & Behavior: ~22 cm (8.6 in). The Short-tailed Parrot is all green. The wing coverts and inner secondary flight feathers are narrowly fringed with yellowish, but are noticeable only at close range. The bill is thick and dusky. It has a short tail and broad wings. It is structurally similar to an Amazon parrot, but is smaller, all green, and restricted to large Amazonian rivers. See Orange-winged Parrot.
Status: The Short-tailed Parrot is common along floodplain forest that flanks major Amazonian Rivers. It also occurs in Co, Ec, and Br.
Name in Spanish: Loro de Cola Corta.
Sub-species: Short-tailed Parrot (Graydidascalus brachyurus), Temminck and Kuhl, 1820.
Meaning of Name: Graydidascalus: Gray= in honor of English ornithologist John Edward Gray (1800-1875) and didaskalos= teacher. brachyurus: L. brakhus= short ouros, oura= with tail.
