Identification & Behavior: ~21.5 cm (8.5 in). The Sora has gray sides of the head, neck, and upper breast with distinctive black face and median neck down the upper neck. Most of the underparts are banded. The Upperparts mottled with blackish and brown. The legs are greenish and the bill is yellowish. It is a boreal migrant likely to overlap with Black Rail and Paint-billed Crake during the months of October through May.
Status: The Sora is a rare visitor to the coastal wetlands, south to Lima. Apparently, it was more regular before but is now rare perhaps due to the widespread conversion of coastal wetlands. It also occurs in Co and Ec.
Name in Spanish: Gallineta Sora.
Sub-species: Sora (Porzana carolina) Linnaeus, 1758.
Meaning of Name: Porzana: Italian name for small crakes. carolina: in reference to the Carolina Colonies of North America.
