Identification & Behavior: ~42.5 cm (17 in). The Whimbrel is grayish-brown with a pale belly. It has distinctive pale eyebrows alongside a black stripe from the base of the bill to the nape. It has a long decurved bill with a reddish or flesh-colored base of the mandible. It is similar to the Marbled Godwit, but it is distinguished by having a shorter and decurved bill. Status: The Whimbrel is a common Boreal Migrant along the coast of Peru where it is present during the months of September through April. It also occurs in Co, Ec, Br, Bo, Ch.

Name in Spanish: Zarapito Trinador.

Sub-species: Whimbrel (Numenius phaeopus hudsonicus), Latham 1790.

Meaning of Name: Numenius: Gr. noumënios, noumënia = bird mentioned by Hesychius and associated with a torch or new Moon. phaeopus: L. phaios= dark brown and pous= foot.
