Identification & Behavior: ~19.5 cm (7.6 in). The Buff-fronted Owl has dark brown upperparts and head. The forehead, facial discs, and underparts are buff. It is poorly known in Peru where it is generally found in humid and semi-humid forests at scattered locations in the east slope of the Andes. It also occurs in humid forests of the west slope of the Andes in Piura. The facial pattern and overall plumage are unmistakable but see Cinnamon Screech-Owl.
Status: The Buff-fronted Owl is rare and local at elevations ranging between 1500-2900 m. It also occurs in Co, Ec, Br, and Bo.
Name in Spanish: Lechucita de Frente Anteada.
Sub-species: Buff-fronted Owl (Aegolius harrisii harrisii), Cassin, 1849.
Meaning of Name: Aegolius: Gr. Aigölios= ominous bird. harrisii: In honor of Edward Harris (1799-1863), naturalist and American explorer.
