Identification & Behavior: ~13.5 cm (5.2 in). The male Allpahuayo Antbird is dark gray with a black throat and a blackish crown. The wing coverts are black with multiple white wing bars. The tail feathers are blackish narrowly tipped with whitish. The female has a gray head and rest of the upperparts. The wing coverts are black with rufous wing bars. The underparts are rufous with a white center of the belly. Both sexes have a light gray iris. It forages in dense understory of forests that grow in sandy and nutrient-poor soils. It is very similar to the Black-headed Antbird but their ranges do not overlap.
Status: Endemic. The Allpahuayo Antbird is uncommon and restricted two small areas in Loreto.
Name in Spanish: Hormiguero de Allpahuayo.
Sub-species: Allpahuayo Antbird (Percnostola arenarum), M. L. Isler, Alvarez, P. L. Isler and Whitney, 2002.
Meaning of Name: Percnostola: Gr. Perknos= dark-coloured, dusky and stole= dress, clothing. arenarum: L. arenarum= of the sands.
