Identification & Behavior: ~16 cm (6.2 in). The male Black Bushbird is all black. The female has black upperparts and head with chestnut rest of the underparts. Both sexes have a thick bluish-gray bill, with the mandible upturned near the tip. It forages in dense foliage generally at tree falls, and along streams and other dense foliage. The male is similar to a male White-shouldered Antbird. The female is similar to a female Plumbeous Antbird.
Status: The Black Bushbird is generally rare and apparently restricted to the northern half of the Loreto Region. It also occurs in Co, Ec, Br, and Bo.
Name in Spanish: Arbustero Negro.
Sub-species: Black Bushbird (Neoctantes niger), (Pelzeln), 1859.
Meaning of Name: Neoctantes: Gr. Neos= new, strange and ktantes= murderer. niger: L. niger= black, dark colored, shining black, jet black.
