Identification & Behavior: ~18 cm (7 in). The male Goeldi’s Antbird is uniformly black. The female is uniformly rufous with a white throat and grayish head or forehead. Both sexes have a red iris and bluish bare skin restricted to the back side of the eye. It forages in the understory of seasonally flooded forests generally in pairs. The male is very similar to the male White-shouldered Antbird, even by sound, but these two antbirds replace each other geographically.

Status: The Goeldi’s Antbird is fairly common and widespread in southeast Peru where it is known to range up to 800 m along the foothill of the Andes. It also occurs in Br and Bo.

Name in Spanish: Hormiguero de Goeldi.

Sub-species: Goeldi’s Antbird (Akletos goeldii), (E. Snethlage), 1908.

Meaning of Name: Akletos: Gr. Klētos= called, chosen. With the prefix A turne negative, therefore Aklētos= uncalled, unbidden. goeldii: In honor of Emil August Göldi (1859-1917) Swiss zoologist resident in Brazil 1884-1905, Director of Museu Paraense de Historia Natural, Belém.

Formerly knows as Myrcmeciza goeldii (2018).
