Identification & Behavior: ~17.5 cm (6.8 in). The Orange-throated Tanager has a black head, and mantle. The wings are blue. It has a distinctive bright orange throat and yellow rest of the underparts. It forages in the canopy of humid montane forests in pairs, usually in the company of mixed species flocks. Its plumage is unmistakable but see Gilded Barbet.

Status: The Orange-throated Tanager is uncommon and very local known to occur in the Rio Cenepa basin at elevations ranging between 400-800 m. It also occurs in Ec.

Name in Spanish: Tangara de Garganta Naranja.

Meaning of Name: Wetmorethraupis: In honor of Dr Frank Alexander Wetmore (1886-1978) US ornithologist, systematist and collector. sterrhopteron: Gr. Sterrhos= stiff, hard and pteron= feather.
