Identification & Behavior: ~16 cm (6.3 in). The Red-capped Cardinal is bluish-black above and white below. The head is read with yellow iris and lower mandible. It has a black patch on the neck. The Red-capped Cardinal favors edges of river and lakes in the Amazonian lowland forests. It is very similar to the recently introduced Red-crested Cardinal, but their geographic ranges do not overlap.
Status: The Red-capped Cardinal is uncommon and widespread in Amazonia where it is known to range up to 600 m along the foothill of the Andes. It also occurs in Co, Ec, Br, and Bo.
Name in Spanish: Cardenal de Gorro Rojo.
Sub-species: Red-capped Cardinal (Paroaria gularis gularis), (Linnaeus), 1766.
Meaning of Name: Paroaria: Tupí name Tiéguacú paroára for a small yellow, red, and gray bird. gularis: L. gula, gularis= throat, throated.
