Identification & Behavior: ~19 cm (7.8 in). The Red-crested Cardinal is bluish-gray above and white below. It has a red hood with a prominent red crest. It was introduced in Lima by the pet trade industry. Birds in Lima likely escaped from breeders and now have been reported feeding young in part of the city. The Red-crested Cardinal is the newest bird establishing a breeding population in the city. Its range does not overlap with that of the similar Red-capped Cardinal.
Status: The Red-crested Cardinal is an introduced species. It occurs naturally in open habitats in Br and Bo.
Name in Spanish: Cardenal de Cresta Roja.
Sub-species: Red-crested Cardinal (Paroaria coronata), A J. F. Miller, 1776.
Meaning of Name: Paroaria: Tupí name Tiéguacú paroára for a small yellow, red, and grey bird.
coronata: L. corona= crown, coronatus= crowned.
