Identification & Behavior: ~12 cm (5.5 in). The Sulphur-throated Finch has grayish-brown upperparts and plain light brown underparts. The face and throat are yellow. Sexes are similar. The immature is similar but lacks the yellow throat and face. It congregates in large flock that move about over open savannah habitat in northwest Peru. It is superficially similar to a juvenile Saffron Finch, but is smaller, has a thick bill, and almost always travels in flocks. Also, see a female Parrot-billed Seedeater.

Status: The Sulphur-throated Finch is common but restricted to flat tropical savannah in Tumbes, Piura, Lambayeque and extreme northern La Libertad. It also occurs in Ec.

Meaning of Name: Sicalis: Gr. sikalis, sukallis, sukalidos= a small, black-headed bird, mentioned by Epicharmus. taczanowskii: In honor of Wladyslaw Kazimierovic Taczanowski (1819-1890) Polish zoologist, collector, Curator of Zoology, Warsaw University Mus., 1862-1890.
