Identification & Behavior: ~25 cm (10 in). The White-capped Tanager is mostly bluish black with a snow white cap. The throat and upper breast are scarlet red (more saturated in the male). The juvenile is dull black with a white cap, but not red on the throat. It often forages in family groups in the canopy and sub-canopy of humid montane forest. Its size and color patterns are unmistakable.
Status: The White-capped Tanager is common in montane forests of the east slope of the Andes at elevations ranging between 1700 – 2800 m south to Central Peru. It also occurs in Co and Ec.
Name in Spanish: Tangara de Gorro Blanco.
Sub-species: White-capped Tanager (Sericossypha albocristata), (Lafresnaye), 1843.
Meaning of Name: Sericossypha: Gr. Serikon= silk and kossuphos= blackbird. albocristata: L. albus= white and cristatus= crested, plumed.
