Identification & Behavior: ~12 cm (5.1 in). The male Yellow-bellied Dacnis has black upperparts with a yellow stripe bordering the mantle. It has a green crown. The chin is black bordered by yellow on the sides and the rest of the underparts. The female has grayish upperparts, throat, and breast with the rest of the underparts yellowish gray. The iris is bright red in both sexes. It forages in pairs along forest edges and second growth. It seldom joins mixed species flock. The female is similar to the female Black-faced Dacnis but the red iris is diagnostic.

Status: The Yellow-bellied Dacnis is uncommon in Amazonia where it is known to range up to 1000 m along the foothill of the Andes. It also occurs in Co, Ec, Br, and Bo.

Name in Spanish: Dacnis de Vientre Amarillo.

Sub-species: Yellow-bellied Dacnis (Dacnis flaviventer), d’Orbigny and Lafresnaye, 1837.

Meaning of Name: Dacnis: Gr. Daknis= Type of bird from Egypt, otherwise unidentified, mentioned by Hesychius and Pompeius Festus. flaviventer: L. flavus= yellow, golden-yellow and venter, ventris= belly.hr
