Identification & Behavior:
~9.5 cm (4 in)The male Glittering-bellied Emerald is all green with bluish on the throat and breast. The belly can be green or coppery-green. The tail is forked and green on the upperside and dusky on the underside. The bill is coral red with a black tip. The female is green above and gray below. It has a black mask through the eye bordered above by a white stripe.  The tail has grayish tips on the outer tail feathers. The male and female have similar bill color as that of a White-chinned Sapphire. These species are likely to overlap in Southeast Peru.

Status: The Glittering-bellied Emerald is known from a few sight records and photographs taken in Madre de Dios. It also occurs in Br and Bo.

Name in Spanish: Esmeralda de Vientre Dorado.

Sub-species: Glittering-bellied Emerald (Chlorostilbon lucidus lucidus), Shaw, 1812.

Meaning of Name: Chlorostilbon: Gr. Khlōros= green and stilbōn, stilbontos= shining. lucidus:  L. lucidus, lucis= clear, bright.
