Identification & Behavior: ~10.5 cm (4.1 in). The Buff-thighed Puffleg has green upperparts. Feathers on the underparts are green fringed with whitish giving a somewhat a scaly effect. The center of belly and vent areas is whitish in some individuals. The leg tufts are buff in color and not well developed in many individuals.  The tail is dusky with a greenish effect without whitish tips. The bill is black and straight. Its range does not overlap with the similar and closely related Greenish Puffleg.

Status: The Buff-thighed Puffleg is uncommon in humid montane forests on the east slope of the southern Andes of Peru at elevations ranging between 1600-2450 m. It also occurs in Bo.

Name in Spanish: Calzadito de Muslo Anteado.

Sub-species: Buff-thighed Puffleg (Haplophaedia assimilis affinis), Taczanowski, 1884.  E slope of Andes of N & C Peru (Amazonas S to Huánuco; also Cerros del Sira.
(Haplophaedia assimilis assimilis), Elliot, 1876. E slope from S Peru (Cuzco) to C Bolivia (Cochabamba).

Meaning of Name: Haplophaedia: Gr. Haploos=  sheer, simple and phaidros=  brilliant, bright. assimilis: L. assimilis similar, like.
