Identification & Behavior: ~11.5 cm (4.5 in).  The Buff-banded Tyrannulet is mostly gray-olive above. The crown is gray bordered by a broad pale superciliary. The wings coverts are blackish with two buffy wing bars.  The base of the lower mandible is orange-yellow. The lower rump is brownish in color. It forages in the canopy and sub-canopy of humid montane forest. It is similar to the White-banded Tyrannulet but is distinguished by ranging at lower elevations and by having buffy wing bars. Status: The Buff-banded Tyrannulet is rare and poorly known in montane forests of the east slope of the Andes in extreme southeast Peru at elevations ranging between 1100-2600 m. There are sight records from as far north as the Manu Road in Cuzco. It also occurs in Bo.

Name in Spanish: Tiranillo de Franja Anteada.

Sub-species: Buff-banded Tyrannulet (Mecocerculus hellmayri), Berlepsch, 1907.

Meaning of Name: Mecocerculus: Gr. mekos= length and kerkos= tail. hellmayri: In honor of Carl Eduard Hellmayr (1878-1944) Austrian/US ornithologist.
