Status: The Buff-banded Tyrannulet is rare and poorly known in montane forests of the east slope of the Andes in extreme southeast Peru at elevations ranging between 1100-2600 m. There are sight records from as far north as the Manu Road in Cuzco. It also occurs in Bo.

Sub-species: Buff-banded Tyrannulet (Mecocerculus hellmayri), Berlepsch, 1907.
Meaning of Name: Mecocerculus: Gr. mekos= length and kerkos= tail. hellmayri: In honor of Carl Eduard Hellmayr (1878-1944) Austrian/US ornithologist.
