Identification & Behavior: ~17 cm (6.8 in). The Crowned Slaty Flyctacher is mostly gray with darker upperparts. It has a black crown with a semi-concealed yellow crown patch. The sides of the head are gray with a black stripe through the eye. It forages in the canopy of the forest, often along forest edges and semi-open habitats. It is smaller and slender than the Eastern Kingbird. Also, see the Sirystes.

Status: The Crowned Slaty Flycatcher is an uncommon and widespread Austral migrant in Amazonia where it is known to range up to 1000 m along the foothill of the Andes. It is expected in Peru during the months of February through November. It also occurs in Co, Ec, Br, and Bo.

Name in Spanish: Mosquero-Pizarroso Coronado.

Sub-species: Crowned Slaty Flycatcher (Empidonomus aurantioatrocristatus aurantioatrocristatus), (d’Orbigny and Lafresnaye), 1837.

Meaning of Name: Empidonomus: Gr. empis, empidos= gnat, mosquito and nomos, nemo= feeding, to consume. aurantioatrocristatus: L. aurantius= orange-colored and ater, atri, atro= black, and cristatus, crista= crested.
