Identification & Behavior: ~18.5 cm (7.2 in). The Sirystes has a gray mantle with dusky wings and tail. The crown is black with a bushy crest the bird keep mostly erect. The underparts are whitish. The bill is black. It forages alone in the canopy of tall mature forests in Amazonia. It is similar to an Eastern Kingbird, which is an Austral migrant that moves about in flocks and does not forage in the forest interior.
Status: The Sirystes is uncommon to rare and widespread in Amazonia where it is known to range up to 700 m along the foothill of the Andes. It also occurs in Co, Ec, Br, and Bo.
Name in Spanish: Siristes.
Sub-species: Sirystes (Sirystes sibilator albocinereus), P. L. Sclater and Salvin, 1880.
Meaning of Name: Sirystes: Gr. suristes, surizo= piper, to play the pipes. sibilator: L. sibilator, sibilatoris, sibilare= whistler, to whistle.
