Identification & Behavior: ~11.5 cm (4.5 in). The Variegated Bristle-Tyrant has an olive mantle. The crown is gray. It has a pale eye-ring and a large black ear patch. The bill is bicolored with a black culmen and orange mandible. The wing coverts are black with two broad rufous wing bars. The breast is olive and grades to yellow towards the rest of the underparts. It forages in the upper understory of humid montane forests. It is similar to the Marble-faced Bristle-Tyrant but is distinguished by having a bicolored bill and two broad rufous wing bars. Status: The Variegated Bristle-Tyrant is uncommon in montane forests of the east slope of the Andes at elevations ranging between 400-2300 m. It also occurs in Co and Ec.

Name in Spanish: Moscareta-Cerdosa Variegada.

Sub-species: Variegated Bristle-Tyrant (Phylloscartes poecilotis), (P. L. Sclater), 1862.

Meaning of Name: Phylloscartes: Gr. phullon = leaf and skairo= to skip, to dance. poecilotis: Gr. poikilos= pied, spotted, variegated and otis, otos= ear, eared.
