Identification & Behavior: ~14.5 cm (5.7 in). The Yellow-Green Vireo has olive upperparts and tail. The throat and center of the belly are whitish bordered by yellow on the sides of the underparts. It has a gray cap not or faintly bordered by a blackish stripe. It has white superciliary, dusky lores, and brown iris. The Yellow-Green Vireo forages in the canopy and sub-canopy of forest in Amazonia. It is very similar to the Red-eyed Vireo but is distinguished yellow sides of the underparts with a whitish center of the belly and by a larger size. Also, see the smaller Brown-capped Vireo.

Status: The Yellow-Green Vireo is a common and widespread Boreal migrant in Amazonia where it is known to range up to 900 m along the foothill of the Andes. It is expected in Peru during the months of September through March. The Yellow-Green Vireo also occurs in Co, Ec, Br, and Bo.

Name in Spanish: Víreo Verde-Amarillo.

Sub-species: Yellow-green Vireo (Vireo flavoviridis flavoviridis), (Cassin), 1851. Breeds Rio Grande delta (S USA-NE Mexico border) and S in Mexico (from NC Sonora in W and from N Tamaulipas in E) through Central America to C Panama (including Coiba I and Pearl Is), possibly also to E Panama (Darién) and adjacent Colombia; migrates to NW South America (Colombia S to Bolivia).
(Vireo flavoviridis forreri), Madarász, 1885.  Breeds Tres Marias Is, off Nayarit, in W Mexico; migrates to Amazonia.

Meaning of Name: Vireo : L. virere= to be green; vireo, vireonis= small green bird. flavoviridis: L. flavus= yellow, golden-yellow and virere= to be green, viridis= green.
