Identification & Behavior: ~38 cm (15 in). The Scarlet-fronted Parakeet has a red forehead that does not go over the eyes. The bill is pale. The leading edge of the wings in the shoulder area is red.  It has red where the tarsus meets the thighs.  It is similar to the Red-masked Parakeet but is distinguished by having the red forehead without going over the eyes. These two parakeets overlap in parts of their range.  Also, see Mitred Parakeet.

Status: The Scarlet-fronted Parakeet is rare to fairly common on the west slope of the Andes where it ranges at elevations generally between 900-3000 m. It also occurs in Co and Ec.

Name in Spanish: Cotorra de Frente Escarlata.

Meaning of Name: Psittacara: L psitta= para and cara=resembling or look alike. wagleri: in honor of Johan George Wagler (1800-1832) German Herpetologist systematist and author.
