Identification & Behavior: ~19.5 cm (7.7 in). The White-faced Storm-Petrel has gray upperparts including the nape and crown, but the rump is white. All the rest of the body including the underwing lining are white. It shows a broad dark streak from the eye down the neck and a broken broad breast band.  It is similar to Hornby’s (Ringed) Storm-Petrel, but it is distinguished by having a square tail, white underwing lining, a broken breast band, and by being stockier.

Status: The White-faced Storm-Petrel is highly pelagic. Its population abundance and movements are poorly understood. It also occurs in Ec, Br, and Ch.

Name in Spanish: Golondrina de Mar de Cara Blanca.

Sub-species: White-faced Storm-Petrel (Pelagodroma marina maoriana), Mathews 1912.

Meaning of Name: Pelagodroma:  Gr.  Pelagos= sea and dromos = pilot. marina: l. marinus, mare, maris= marine, sea.
