Identification & Behavior: ~17 cm (6.6 in). The White-rumped Sandpiper in basic plumage is gray with a white belly and distinctive white rump. The alternate plumage shows a mottled back and finely streaked breast. It shows a pale superciliary line and a reddish area on the base of the lower mandible.  Its wings project beyond the tail when the bird is standing. It is similar to the Baird’s Sandpiper but is distinguished by being gray, having a white rump, and reddish area on the base of the bill.

Status: The White-rumped Sandpiper is an uncommon to rare Boreal migrant in Amazonia. It appears to occur in Peru only as a transient migrant during the months of October through November and March and May. There are also isolated sight records in places away from the Amazonian lowlands. It also occurs in Co, Ec, Br, Bo, and Ch.

Name in Spanish: Playerito de Lomo Blanco.

Sub-species: White-rumped Sandpiper (Calidris fuscicollis), Vieillot 1819.

Meaning of Name: Calidris: Gr. kalidris, skalidris= shorebird the color of ash mentioned by Aristotle. fuscicollis: L. fuscus= dark brown and collis, collum= neck.
