Identification & Behavior: ~12 cm (4.7 in). The male Yungas Manakin is mostly black with a sky blue back and ruby red crown. The female is all green. Both sexes have reddish legs. It forages in the mid and understory of humid montane forests. It is similar to the Blue-backed Manakin and probably difficult to distinguish in the field but their ranges are not known to overlap.

Status: The Yungas Manakin is uncommon in montane Andean forests of southeast Peru at elevations ranging between 900-2000 m. It also occurs in Bo.

Name in Spanish: Saltarín de Yungas.

Sub-species: Yungas Manakin (Chiroxiphia boliviana), J. A. Allen, 1889.

Meaning of Name: Chiroxiphia: Gr. kheir, kheiros= hand and xiphos= sword. boliviana: In reference to the country of Bolivia in South America.
